Colin Macdonald

CSIRO

Colin Macdonald has been CSIRO's H&S Operations Manager for over 7 years. He has been an HSE professional for over 20 years. He commenced his interest in OHS whilst serving with the British Army. Prior to joining CSIRO, Colin was a Regional Manager with the National Safety Council of Australia. He has a Masters Degree in Safety Management and a wealth of experience gained from being a consultant serving a variety of industries and also with the diversity of work in the HSE Manager's role in CSIRO.


Andrea McMillan

University of Otago

Andrea is Head, Health and Safety Compliance at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand. The team consists of 16 head count and has responsibility for a wide range of compliance areas, including animal welfare, biological compliance, hazardous substances as well as general health and safety in the University environment. The team also self-manages work related compensation and return to work programme for staff. Wellbeing, including mental health and stress, are areas of increased focus over the last few years.

Prior to working at the University, Andrea held a range of health and safety management positions in the manufacturing sector, and was an Occupational Health Nurse and a warranted inspector with the Department of Labour. She has also held a number of leadership positions nationally within the Department of Labour in occupational health initiatives, and has been a senior auditor for the ACC Partnership Programme in health, safety and injury management.


Mike Gavin

Edith Cowan University

Mike Gavin is an experienced Occupational Safety and Health Practitioner with over 30 years of experience. Mike's major function is that as the Manager, Occupational Safety & Health at Edith Cowan University and has held this position for over 14 years. Mike is also substantially involved and has been for over 25 years in the development and delivery of training and education programs in private industry and the education sector. He is a sessional lecturer delivering Occupational Safety and Health programs at the undergraduate and post graduate level. Mike has a Masters of Health Science, Degree in Occupational Safety and Health, a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering and holds the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.


David Lloyd-Jones

University of Technology, Sydney

David Lloyd-Jones is Environment, Health and Safety Technical Coordinator at the University of Technology, Sydney and has been in that role since 1997 after graduating with a degree in Applied Chemistry. His work focuses on EHS risk management and technical aspects of EHS across all functions of the University. This includes laboratory, workshop, construction and fieldwork safety. He has a strong interest in integrating risk management into business processes.


Lisa Kelly

University of Queensland

Lisa Kelly has worked as an Occupational Hygiene Advisor with the University of Queensland since 1997. Prior to this role she worked as an inspector with the Qld Division of Workplace Health and Safety for 4 years. She holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (OH&S) from QUT and a Graduate Diploma (Industrial Hygiene) from Deakin University.


Daphne McCurdy

University of New England

Daphne McCurdy joined UNE in 2003 as OHS Officer, bring with her over twenty years experience in health and safety across a wide range of industries, both nationally and internationally. In addition to being responsible for the management and monitoring of UNE's compliance with OHS statutory obligations and its OHS policies and programs, Daphne is also a sessional trainer in various UNE undergraduate and professional programs, including Health and Rural Medicine. She has also been involved in curriculum development in several undergraduate programs across the University sector in relation to OHS and risk management content. Daphne is an OHS accredited trainer in both State and Commonwealth jurisdictions and has developed and conducted workplace health and training programs for the service, manufacturing and construction industries. Daphne has a Master of Health Science, Graduate Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, Bachelor of Arts, Trained Teacher Certificate and Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and is a member of SIA, NETSIN , NUSA & AUSA.


Steve Guggenheimer

University of Melbourne

Over the past 30 years Steve Guggenheimer has worked in various capacities at the University of Melbourne. These include Nuclear Physics, Experimental Physics and teaching. He was made Radiation Advisor to the university in 1994 and in 1997 he moved into the role of Environmental and Industrial Hygienist for the university. Presently Steve's role is an Environment Health and Safety Advisor to the university with responsibilities in areas of radiation and general EH&S.


Eddie Stoelwinder

University of Western Australia

Eddie Stoelwinder joined Safety and Health at the University of Western Australia in 2007 following completion of the Post Graduate Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety at Curtin University of Technology. Eddie is a member of SIA and has a particular interest in system safety and safety in design.

Eddie qualified as a physiotherapist in 1976 and has postgraduate qualifications in musculoskeletal physiotherapy. He has experience in most fields in physiotherapy and worked in his own practice from 1979 through to 2007. During this time he has been involved in treating injured patients and has a keen empathy for the injured worker and this now drives his interest in prevention of injuries and disease.


John Whale

Monash University

John Whale has worked at Monash University since 2005 as an OHS&E Consultant in the University's OHS Unit. John joined Monash after completing his Graduate Diploma in Hazard Management at Ballarat University (VIOSH). John has a background in manufacturing and materials science and has worked extensively in the research field at BHP and Deakin University as well as within the automotive industry. He is currently studying a Masters degree in Human Factors at the University of South Australia.


Andrew Knight

University of Brighton

Andrew Knight is the Assistant Head of Health and Safety at the University of Brighton and Chair of the Universities Safety and Health Association special interest group on safety in fieldwork.

Andrew began his career working for a small Safety and Environmental consultancy in Sussex providing safety solutions to a range of public and private sector clients.

In 2008 he joined the British Standards Institute BS8848 technical committee and in the same year was awarded a University of Brighton Excellence in Facilitating Learning Award for innovation in safety training.

He has over 10 years experience as a Health and Safety Practitioner with a range of companies and joined University of Brighton as the Estate and Facilities Management Safety Adviser in 2004. He joined the Health and Safety Department of University of Brighton in 2006.

Andrew is a member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, the International Institute for Risk and Safety Management, the Association of University Radiological Protection Officers and the Institute of Safety in Technology and Research.

Andrew is author of the Health, Safety and Environment Dictionary and the Health and Safety Assessment Workbook for Offices. He holds a B.Sc in Biology and Geography and a NEBOSH Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health.


Janelle Hobbins

Queensland University of Technology

Janelle has worked in the University Facility Management area for past 6½ years, at Griffith University and currently at QUT. She is presently Health & Safety Co-ordinator for QUT Facilities Management and brings to this role nearly 29 years experience as a trainer, consultant, government advisory board member, occupational health nurse, rehabilitation co-ordinator and safety advisor. Her experience across a wide range of industries includes construction and maintenance; metal fabrication and foundries, education, general and food processing, services and retail, has given her a broad and practical OHS knowledge and skills base.


Chris Miller

CSIRO

Chris is the HSE Manager for CSIRO Land and Water Division which has around 600 staff located at ten sites across the country. He is based the CSIRO laboratories at the University of Adelaide's Waite Campus.

Chris joined CSIRO in 1999 following technical and administrative positions at the Adelaide University He was Manager of the University's OH&S Unit from 1995 to 1999 and has been a long-time member of AUSA and participant in these Conferences.

Chris has qualifications in Business Administration and completed a Graduate Diploma in Occupational Health at Adelaide University in 1993.


Doug Pringle

Massey University, New Zealand

Doug joined Massey University in 1991 and works as the Manager - Health and Safety at Massey University, New Zealand. He is responsible for over sight in the management of health and safety in employment legislation, hazardous substances, radiation, employment injury prevention, ergonomic intervention, compensation, and rehabilitation services to staff.

Doug's qualifications include a BAgrSc, Post graduate DipAgSc and BSc with major in computer science, health and safety.

Prior to working in Health and Safety, Doug was employed in the intensive animal production as technical advisor and production manager.


Leanne Mumford

University of Sydney

Leanne Mumford joined the then Risk Management Office at Sydney University in 1988 after working briefly in the oil, petrochemical, waste disposal and health care industries following graduation as a Chemical Engineer. She has a Master of Safety Science and is a certified practising risk manager. Apart from a one-year break teaching English in Japan, Leanne worked continuously as an OHS professional at Sydney University until November 2006, when she left to live in Japan for two years. She returned to OHSIM at Sydney University recently to assist with organising this conference.

Leanne's presentation draws on her Japanese work and study experiences to provide insights about OHS in another culture.


Michael O'Donoghue

Deakin University

Michael is the Manager, Occupational Health and Safety at Deakin University. The OHS unit provides services in safety, accident compensation and emergency management. He has previously worked in health, safety and environment as well as human resources with private and public electricity utilities and state laboratories.

Michael has a B AppSc (Chemistry), B Arts and B Commerce from the University of Melbourne and Graduate Diplomas in Occupational Hygiene and Ergonomics.


Michael Flannery

University of Southern Queensland

Michael Flannery moved into the University environment two years following a celebrated career in the Australian Army as an Air Safety Investigator and Aviation Safety Manager. Michael is a member of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators (ISASI) and a member of the SIA. In 2005 Michael was awarded the Army Aviator of the Year and a Chief of Defence Force commendation primarily for his work in developing and introducing the Aviation Risk Management System (AVRM) into the Army.
