In November 2021, the Office of Industrial Relations found that higher degree students on a stipend were not workers under the Workers Compensation and Rehabilitation Act 2003 (Qld), and therefore were not eligible for worker’s compensation. WorkCover Queensland have appealed the matter.
In this session, AUSA memebers will have the opportunity to hear from Legal representatives involved in this matter and how the learnings may apply to our workplaces. Laura Hillman (Senior Associate, Clayton Utz) will be providing members with an update on “WorkCover for higher degree students on a stipend”. Laura has been working with James Cook University and the Office of Industrial Relations in relation to this matter.
The program of events:
- 12pm: Lunch and networking (for in person attendees only)
- 12.30pm: Online sessions commences - Update from Laura Hillman, and responding to questions (available online)
- 1.15pm: TBC - Updates from any of the Queensland health and safety teams (hot topics) (available online), and possible small group discussions (online TBC).
- 2pm closure
